Pink- Stupid Girls: Analysis

In Pink's music video, Stupid Girls, she presents various personas of women today, however, all of the women are very similar in that the main goal is to get the attention of a man and to get the gratification of the male gaze. Levi Strauss' theory of binary opposites is presented at the beginning of the music video through the "Angel" and the "Devil" on either side of the little girl's shoulders. The Devil wants the little girl to follow the media representations shown on TV and any other media platform and the Angel wants the little girl to be herself and choose to be or do whatever she wants to do.
They introduce the classic "blonde bimbo" and this character is used throughout the video to represent the stereotyped women who change their body due to different influences of the media, celebrities or even due to their own personal influences. Pink mocks the 'usual' representation of women in media by overexaggerating various stereotypes in order to emphasise the effect it can have on their body. Despite the mocking of these various personas, she does have two scenarios in which the characters are going through serious medical issues. It is quite interesting she takes one more seriously than the other. There is a 2-minute scene in which Pink is seen entering the ladies toilet and there is already another girl present there, who seems to be gagging herself. We understand that she is suffering from bulimia, which Pink mocks as she gags herself. As Pink gags herself, she screams" I Love Being Skinny", emphasising what the  For this illness, it can be portrayed as if she is mocking girls who have this illness. Contrastingly, we have another scene in which Pink is on a hospital surgery bed with cosmetic lines drawn all over her body, and from her facial expressions we can see that she is quite concerned, which can present her real concern for girls who go to the extreme of getting cosmetic surgery in order to change the way they look. Pink does not mock this concept or idea at all in comparison to all the other personas seen in different scenarios.

This can show that Pink does feel that girls can go to an extreme to feel fit the media's representations and stereotypes of what a girl should look like and her mannerisms. Pink's video may or may not be seen as a post-feminism text as she is more so pointing out the bad in the media representations of women, not so much the partial equality we have achieved over the last half a century. She questions "What happened to the dream of a girl president?" which could be referring to years ago when women were fighting for their rights and equality, they all had these dreams, but  Pink may now feel that we have lost the focus of what women and girls may want to achieve and this diversion has been created through media.
