Statement of Aims and Intentions - Draft

The name of the song is Something Beautiful which can have various connotations and will be presented by the artist through performance. The artist will be a young female who will be presented as quite strong and women empowered through her outfit and the lighting used in the video. The way in which she performs will use body language to emphasise her character and style as an artist. How and why will you use media language in your media production? The music video will be using Roland Barthes' theory of semiotics and signification, as well as, Andrew Goodwin's five key aspects to a music video. Goodwin's theories would also be applied as firstly, his theories are associated with the conventions of a music video and at least one of them can be identified in every music video. The music video will illustrate a relation between the visuals and the lyrics or possibly have some disjuncture as well as have a star image.   This would be seen in the music video, as the

Beyonce - Representation and emotional response

“How are media language and representations used to create emotional responses in the audience in BeyoncĂ©’s “Formation” video?” BeyoncĂ©’s music video ‘Formation’ uses various media language devices and representations through visuals and lyrics in order to create an emotional response from the audience. The music video is based on the flooding that was at the time in New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina. This would immediately create an emotional response from the audience as there were many issues that had arisen from the natural disaster, both physically and politically. Naturally, there would have been a crisis in the loss of homes and building being washed away by the floods; however racial tensions did come about following from this. It was brought to attention that many of the New Orleans black citizens felt that there was a prejudice against them and that they were not aided or treated the same way as the white Caucasians may have been, post the floods. It was found that p

Music Video Analysis

Spice Girls - Wannabe This particular music video seems to have a looser narrative with not much clarity, however, we suspect that the members of the famous 90s pop girl group have crashed a posh dinner party.  Goodwin's theory of a good narrative and performance can have the outcome of an interesting music video. Here this can be seen as the five girls perform a dance routine which would have been conventionalised for any girl band music video. Another of Goodwin's theory is the idea of the 'Star Image' which is the idea that a pop star or anyone has to have a certain characteristic or persona which can allow their viewers/ audience identify who they are. By doing this they are becoming a "star" which is what record companies would want and the personas can also appeal to the audience. This theory can be very applicable not only to this music video but the Spice Girls in general, as each member has is given a particular "title" as such and follows

Pink- Stupid Girls: Analysis

In Pink's music video, Stupid Girls, she presents various personas of women today, however, all of the women are very similar in that the main goal is to get the attention of a man and to get the gratification of the male gaze. Levi Strauss' theory of binary opposites is presented at the beginning of the music video through the "Angel" and the "Devil" on either side of the little girl's shoulders. The Devil wants the little girl to follow the media representations shown on TV and any other media platform and the Angel wants the little girl to be herself and choose to be or do whatever she wants to do.  They introduce the classic "blonde bimbo" and this character is used throughout the video to represent the stereotyped women who change their body due to different influences of the media, celebrities or even due to their own personal influences. Pink mocks the 'usual' representation of women in media by overexaggerating various stereoty

Narrative Theory - Vladimir Propp's Seven Character Types

Propp was a literary critic and founded that the idea a certain type of character was. used in every narrative structure. His theory influenced many filmmakers to producing and writing successful narratives. He also said that all fairy tales follow a specific narrative structure. He suggested that every narrative has 8 different character types, these are: 1. THE HERO - Main character in the story and is the one who goes on a quest, reacts to Donor, fights against the villain and gets the Princess. 2. THE FALSE HERO - takes credit for hero's actions and tries to marry the princess  3. THE VILLAIN -  Fights the hero in some way (and struggles) 4. THE HELPER - Helps the hero on their quest. 5. THE PRINCESS OR PRIZE - The hero deserves her throughout the story, but is unable to be married to her due to evil (villain). Heroes journey often ends with him saving the princess and living happily ever after. 6. THE DISPATCHER - Character who makes the villain's evil known and
